Adrenal Fatigue

 

Adrenal Fatigue (also known as Adrenal Exhaustion) is a condition of varying levels of exhaustion due to prolonged stressors in one’s lifestyle. People often say “I have never been well since…” and this may indicate that their adrenal glands have not sufficiently recovered from an acute or traumatic event or illness.

This condition is often triggered by a long period of stress or one major stressful event- such as a severe illness (e.g. glandular fever, depression), death of a loved one, or a conglomeration of stressful events occurring within a short space of time.

Your adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. They secrete the ‘stress’ hormone, cortisol, amongst other hormones, which enables your body to handle stress. When you go through periods of prolonged stress with little to no recovery periods, your adrenal glands can become exhausted, and they lose their ability to produce sufficient cortisol.

What constitutes stress? Your adrenal glands play a role in responding to stimulus to maintain balance in your body. This stimulus can be mental, emotional, physical, chemical, environmental- basically anything that you can perceive and anything that you do! Negative thoughts, poor food choices, alcohol, drugs, toxins, illness, physical injuries and life events all have the potential to contribute to adrenal fatigue.
