Anxiety

Anxiety is an unwelcome feeling of fear or concern that is often paralysing and quite torturous for those who experience it frequently or for prolonged periods of time. It is something that can be a natural part of life, but when it starts to effect quality of life is when people should start to take action to treat it.

Anxiety Symptoms

Symptoms can include any combination of:

  • Tension,
  • Worry,
  • Restlessness,
  • Irritability,
  • Sweating,
  • Nausea,
  • Problems Concentrating,
  • Fatigue,
  • Trembling, and/or
  • Impaired cognitive ability.

The Impacts of Anxiety

The symptoms of Anxiety can take a toll on people’s lives, and if left untreated can result in:

  • Higher Blood Pressure,
  • Headaches,
  • Gastro,
  • Altered mental patterns,
  • Weight gain (from an increase in the stress hormone Cortisol and binge eating),
  • Increased visits to doctors,
  • Relationship problems,
  • Work problems, and/or
  • Family problems.

As chronic anxiety or anxiety disorders lead sufferers to unhealthy behaviours such as irritability and withdrawal, Anxiety affects not only the sufferer but those around them. Similarly, support and understanding from people close to an Anxiety sufferer can greatly alleviate their anxiety issues and assist in the road to recovery.

Naturopathic Treatment for Anxiety

Conventional medicine has several pharmaceutical options for treating those diagnosed with an Anxiety disorder(such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder). As with all medications, there are possible side effects that may result from not only the pharmaceuticals prescribed but also their reaction with other medicines that may be taken.

A Naturopathic approach begins with listening to the Anxiety sufferer to gain a holistic perspective of their current health situation and then using tools such as Bio Impedance Analysis and iridology to develop a complete picture of their body’s current state. Once a complete picture is developed, the Naturopath can then formulate a plan for treating the anxiety in the most safe and effective manner utilising the combination of modalities that best suits the anxiety sufferers personal needs. These modalities can include herbal medicine, Neuro Emotional Technique, nutritional supplements, Detox programs, relaxation techniques, coaching etc.

The holistic paradigm employed by a Naturopath will also help identify (aided by advanced scientific measures including Bio Impedance Analysis) other any conditions that have resulted from anxiety are also addressed such as weight gain, adrenal fatigue, reduced immunity, stress etc. This ensures that not only is the Anxiety treated, but that the body is brought back to a natural state of vitality so that the person may experience their full life’s potential.
