Are You Entangled in Your Family’s Problems?

“Why is mum so unhappy? Why does she keep making the same mistakes over and over again? Why is dad so negative and resentful? How can I make them feel better about life, make them happy and healthy? I’m afraid of when they will pass away. How can we all experience love and be happy?”

Sound familiar? Maybe you can relate to some of these questions, maybe they are slightly different for you. The truth is you are a part of your family system, and you may be unconsciously (or consciously) trying to “fix” your parents, other family members or yourself. What’s even more abstract is that you may be unconsciously living out the fate of a predecessor that you never even knew.

Bert Hellinger was a german psychotherapist who found in his research that you may carry the pain, suffering and unresolved emotional burdens of your family from up to seven generations prior to you. Have you ever considered that perhaps your suffering is not actually your own? Hellinger’s Laws suggest that the first born child takes on the pain of the father, and the second born child takes on the pain of the mother.

Emotional inheritance creates present day entanglements. Eric Berne was a Canadian psychiatrist who came up with the idea of a family subconscious, or emotional inheritance. According to Eric, your problems often do not start with you or your parents, but goes back much further. Leopold Szondi was a Hungarian psychiatrist who found that in order to survive, latent recessive genes can pass down information gathered from the environment. This allows a species to adapt to environmental changes. However, the passed down information creates what are referred to as entanglements. Entanglements are emotional inheritances that entangle ancestral pain, beliefs and unfinished business of previous generations with you now.

That’s crazy talk, you may be thinking. But what if it wasn’t? What if you could give back the pain and suffering to where it came from, whilst still loving your family and being loved by them? You would then be free to live your own life, free of the burden of pain and suffering that was never yours.

You do realize that the life you have been working so hard to create, whether it be a successful career, new family home, world travel, happy relationship or “insert your dream here”, is much more likely to manifest if you are free to be you without unhelpful family entanglements, right?
